Council Tax reclaiming, charged for two people...

Hi,

I lived alone from 2001 until I bought a house with my partner In Oct 2006. All this time, I was paying standard council tax, which I now understand to be for two people under one roof. Is this true, and if so, can I claim for this time? I have yet to check banding, but I suspect this is probably correct.

Thanks for your help!

There's someone on here called CSI who's an expert on this and will hopefully see this post.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Backdating of discounts can be a funny thing as quite rightly council's tend to ask why you didn't claim earlier. They have a duty to ensure that any discounts are applied correctly and therefore may ask for additional proof of sole occupancy .

You need to make a written statement to the council regarding this issue and let them take it from there, the proof that each council requests tends to vary.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
