Vinegar-proof Lids

This is probably a very stupid question, but how do you know if a jar lid is vinegar proof or not?
I am going to make some chutney and all the recipes say to put into hot jars and seal with a vinegar proof lid but don't say how you know if the lid is vinegar proof or not.
Does anybody out there know?
Thanks

MK

  • Most lids are vinegar proof - the inside of the lid needs to have a plastic coating on it - not just be pure metal which TBH I only see in honey jars now.

  • Pretty much any jar which has previously held an acid product (you are recycling jars, aren't you?) will have a vinegar proof lid.

Jars which contained any tomato based product, such as pasta sauce, pickles of any kind, marmalade (since citrus fruits are acid) curry sauces etc will all have a plastic membrane to protect the metal of the lid.

Having said that, I know of a couple of keen cooks who put chutney type ingredients into tupperware beakers as they are impervious to just about anything and you can still just as effectively spoon out the contents. Hope that helps.
  • Yes, I am recycling jars. Have a cupboard full of them that DH has been moaning about for sometime now!
    Thanks everyone for your help.
