Being cold called about IVAs from India, can they do this?

I am currently being rung from India about IVAs or as they call it "government shemes", even though I have no debts! I have even been rung on Sundays, is this allowed, can they cold-call me on Sundays form India. Is there not a law preventing this, or do they get round this by ringing me from india? Any help appreciated.

Hi
I don't think there are any laws as to when they can call and I think they are allowed to call on a Sunday. I think they can call any time between 8am and 8pm but I could be wrong on this.
Can you find out which company it is and write to them asking not to be called?

It is legal but you can contact bt and request a block on cold calls. It use to be free and takes about a month to set up. A few still get through but then you can challenge them.0

The situation is that the Uk is powerless when it comes to calls made from ourside the UK; therefore the normal harassment rules do not apply.
Accordingly I don't think there is anything you can do unless you want to go to hte trouble of having that number blocked.
Sorry - We even get them at work which is really annoying as so few people have my direct line I assume it is a colleague or close friend/family.0 -
I had this a while ago. All calls came up as international, but were from a company in Manchester (cant remember name sorry). BT cant do anything unless its a UK number i believe. However i just kept telling these people (all with english or american names) that i would call the police if they didnt stop. it worked eventualy. No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

Its not big and its not clever, but if you are abusive, '***k off', it can do the trick!
They then have a reason to remove your number from their dialler.
MSE Martin admitted to this on Radio2 the other day.

Register with TPS, this has stopped the majority of calls we were getting. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is the central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls to your home or mobile telephone numbers. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.
