council tax, is this correct

Please can somebody help me with this calculation!! Daughter has just moved into a rented flat. The council tax is £1299.89 a year. This works approx £130 a month, I understand for council tax, the payment by direct debit is spread over 10 months. Am I correct, or different council spread theirs over 12 months? She moved in her new flat on the 16th August this year. She has been informed starting on the 1st of October, she has to pay for 7.5 months but the payment of £168 a month will be spread for 5 months which will take the payment till the end of March. Does this seems right, which means she has to pay £840 for 5 months? I would have thought she should pay until the 1st January 2209. Should she query this? My calculation is from 16th August, she should pay approx £715 in council tax based on 5.5 months. I might be wrong, never any good at maths!! She things the calculation is correct. Thanks

  • Council tax tuns from April to March, but most councils collect it over 10 months (for accounting purposes) with the final payment for the year being in January.

Your daughter is liable for CT for September to March - 7 months - and 16 days for August.

    1299.89/12 = 108.32 per month
    1299.89/365 = 3.56 per day

so 7 months is 758.24 and 16 days is 56.96 which gives a total bill of 815.20 to be paid.

she could ask for 6 or 7 installments, but they don't have to accept it.

Thanks for your help. It looks as if she is being overcharged by £24.80. I will tell her but doubt whether she will query it.

if she moved in on 16 august 08 then the full charge is due for 228 days between 16 august 08 and 31 March 09,

    With a charge of £1299.89, the daily rate is (1299.89/365) = £3.561342

    This gives total charge due of 228 * £3.561342 = £811.99.

Is he living by herself ? , if so she is entitled to a 25% single person discount.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thanks, CIS for this infor, I am going to see her on sunday and check how the calculation has been worked and asked her to query it. She reckons, the calculation is right but I do not think so. Thanks again for all your help.
