Does anyone work for Ikea?

There's a new store opening here in Southampton next year and they are recruiting soon. Just wondered if anyone here works in an Ikea, or knows anyone who does. School hours with some flexibilty during the school hols is really what I'd be looking for. Do Ikea offer that kind of job? How is the pay?
I have two children in school and a toddler who'll start school in 2011 but ideally I'd like to have some sort of job before then - the trouble is with no family to help at all we'd be relying on childcare. My partner does shift work and never has the same days off each week so I can't even get a weekend/evening job. If I could do school hours I'd only need to worry about paying for childcare for the little one so it might just be workable.
Thanks,
Loopy x

Thanks for that Emma.
I'm wondering what 'flexible' means exactly, I haven't worked outside the home for a few years now so am not sure. Hoping someone who works there can let me know if it's a good place to work, have worked at a place before that made me feel rubbish if I had time off because my child was sick etc0 -
The ikea in Belfast opened within the last year - some people who work there post on the NI subforum? The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

Let me give you a bit of advice from someone who worked at Ikea for 10 years.
Let me comment on a quote that someone posted from the Ikea website 'we think of a career at IKEA like a piece of our flat pack furniture. It starts off in one-way BUT with the right tools, it changes into something fantastic in front of your very eyes'
What that really means is that what it says on the outside of the box is very rarely whats actually in the box and you get walked over frequently.
When they say flexible working ,they mean that you are totally flexible and that you will work the hours that they tell you to,and to hell with your family committments.
Do your self a favour and stay well clear.
I have lots of friends that still work at Ikea and not one of them will tell you that they enjoy working there.
If you don't believe me,go in to any Ikea and ask the staff.0 -

Every story has 2 sides - you may speak to the staff who really enjoy it! (and I have a sneaky suspicion that this poster may have been made redundant by IKEA in the past).
Please do not take this post as "the truth, the whole thruth & nothing but the truth". I know people who have worked at the first UK Ikea store in Warrington since it opened (in 1987, and I can remember borrowing a trolley to trundle a sofa home!) and they would tell you that they love it - good conditions, as flexible as any other large retail company, yellow or blue shirt (can't have it all!) and overtime if you are able to work it.
If you can go to a store, do so, and take every comment from the staff on its own merits.
Godd luck with whatever you decide to do,

Yes you are correct I was one of those people that was made redundant or should I say shafted.
I was also one of those people who would always say what a good company they were to work for, because they used to be one of the best in retail to work for. However times change and where there is a buck to be saved then any loyal long serving co worker is outed, because of course it's cheaper to employ someone else on a much lower wage to do the same job that you did(regardless of the fact that your job is supposed to be redundant!)
You are correct there is two sides to every story and I have been on both of them!
However being made redundant(i use that word loosely)was the best thing they ever done to me.I have a better job with better hours, money and managers!!!0 -
They're okay to work for but what you've gotta remember is that by being over 21 and looking for part time hours around the kids is that they'll try to shaft you on the crap shifts. I managed a year working there till 1am 3 nights a week and being there at 7am on a sunday (hence no letting my hair down on a sat night) Just so I could work around kids and childcare etc0

Apply for it and see where they get, you wont know if you dont apply for it, even if you do get offered a job there you can still look for sometihng else for whatever reason0
