What's the difference????

Options
...between Baking Powder and Bicarb of soda?

I want to make Catznine's banana bread but it calls for bicarb and I only have baking soda.

.....Can I change the plain flour and bicarb for self raising flour? or can I use the baking powder?.. or do I have to wait for tomorrow to go shopping :(?

TIA x x x

Bicarb of soda is one of the ingredients of baking powder. It also has cream of tartar and some other things in. So I don't think they'd be totally interchangeable :(

    thanks juno.

My daughter's waiting 'patiently' ( ) in the kitchen to do some baking. I don't know what'll happen if I try to make the bread without

Right at the start of the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky is a thread which has the full definition of the difference between the two and might help you to decide if they are interchangeable in this case or not. For some things you can substitute freely, for others, not quite so well.

  • I've made Catznines banana bread recipe without baking powder or bicarb, it was perfect, it's a family favourite

    Thank you :)

I didn't wait long enough for your replies :o ... I had a drive up to my Mum and Dads to pinch their bicarb :D

My next dilemma was "is my loaf tin a one pound tin or a two pound tin?" I hedged my bets and put three quarters of the mixture in :D Hope it doesn't overflow  :D

Gawd.... how hard can it be to make a really easy recipe like that? :o

It's amazing how many apparently simple questions can stop you dead in your tracks isn't it?

bicarb is called bicarbonate of soda or baking soda, and baking powder is something different

I wanted to make some bath bombs last week and the receipe said baking soda and I was not sure which it was, I live next door to a chemist and I went in and asked them

Not strictly the answer to the original question but a useful tip anyway:

You can make baking powder by mixing two parts Cream of Tartar with one part bicarbonate of soda. I found this written on a packet of Sainsbury's bicarbonate of soda some years ago & have used it as baking powder ever since.
