I have just been offered a job and they say that they need to do a credit check, all well and good as i have no debts. However before my son left home last year he ran up lots of debts with his bank and mobile phone companies and still continues to be getting into debt and giving my address! Will this affect my job in any way?

As long as you are not financially connected with him, then no. The address does not connect you, but if you signed anything to be guarantor (they would be chasing so you would know), or if you are on a joint account or loan then you would be connected this way.
If you are in any doubt then you could always get a copy of your credit file to check.0 -
Thanks for your reply.I am not connected in any way to his debts thankfully,in fact i only found out when the bailiff turned up.You have put me more at ease now thanks.I have often been told that any debts at an address would show up automatically, therefore preventing the householders from applying for loans, mortgages etc.0

Have you asked why they need to do a credit check? If not, why not? I cant see that your past financial history is anyones business but your own.0

If it's a job in a financial institution or to do with money handling, it's getting more common. It's a way of seeing if people are likely to dip their hands in the till although just because you're in debt, it doesn't make you a thief.0

I will be setting up as a travel agent working from home, dealing with credit/debit cards on a daily basis,so i can see why they do the credit checks.0

Its probably more part of the process of identification, rather than to see your actual credit worthiness.
Good luck with the job!0 -
Thanks skylight, been wanting to do this for ages, can't wait!0

I was looking through a website, can't remember which one now, about debts and there was a woman who's daughter had run thousands of debts whilst living at home.Apparently she was hounded by bailiffs and was unable to apply for credit cards and a mortgage,so I am really worried now as i really want this job.I have been told that i need to complete a notice of dissociation, can any one tell me how i go about this, and is it expensive?0

In these difficult times, I think you should ask for a full set of audited accounts. After all, you are giving them credit (Im assuming your wages are paid in arrears). If the company goes tits up (and travel is quite shaky these days) you will get nothing. The biggest thieves are at the top with all the money and they still want more.0
