Compact and bijou - the slums of tomorrow?

New homes in England are being built smaller than almost anywhere else in Europe, a new exhibition reveals. Are the gleaming new apartment buildings of the past decade the inner-city slums of tomorrow?
Well worth a quarter of a million...or is it?:rotfl:

At least it will reduce the rather cruel practice of determining room size by swinging a cat.0

I'd say it is worth a quarter of a million, quarter of a million Zimbabwe dollars:D0

if that is how people would be prepared to live, surely it would make more sence to live in a shipping container bought for a few hundred quid. if it costs 250k to live like that then i see it as nothing more than a disturbing hint at how life will be in the future.0 -

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

Yep, the next step Soylent Green.0 -
I wouldn't be happy with that for a holiday.

Half a million US dollars for a tiny flat at the back of the East End. This shows exactly why house prices will fall a long way.0

My sitting room alone is bigger than that, as was my first grotty bedsit when I was a student:eek:
Seriously though, these new flats are literally shoeboxes; we recently went to Cardiff and gave our friends' son a lift as he wanted to look at a 'luxury' apartment in Cardiff Bay.....so of course we just had to have a 'nosey' as well.
I wouldn't want to give more than 50K for it - claustrophobic, badly finished, TINY furnishings (I doubt Barbie and Action Man could have fitted on the sofa) and terribly thin walls - and it was on for 250K. Only good point was the great view.
The surrounding area was like a wasteland; no pedestrians and most of the huge blocks are empty anyway, no doubt waiting for the first DSS tenants to take them over.
It was a bit of a reality check for the young chap - he's now looking for a cosy old terrace with its own little garden for under 100K."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

exactly it certainly gives that kind of bleak impression to me. at a quater of a million pounds its hard to believe something like that could possably be touted as not only a slum but something people would be willing to live in for that ammount of money.
that kind of thing would be far better suited to being part of a remote industrial complex where your grafting a 12 hour day, just need somewhere to get your head down till your back on shift, and going back to real life with pocket full of cash every month or few.
on a serious note i would have no problem living in a converted container, but only for the sake of having practicly free accomodation.,0 -
to be honest i could quite easily make something more than livable out of containers, i would start with a row of 3 40ft side by side and sit the next 3 ontop with a 20ft overhang.
if it was as simple as find a bit of land and buy the containers i would be living like that now.0
