John Lewis change procedure for price match etc

Options
Hope this is the correct forum! I'm posting this partly for information for others looking for a pricematch from John Lewis and partly to check if anyone else has been given the same information as I have!

I went into John Lewis yesterday looking to buy a new desktop PC and a laptop too. PC World has the desktop cheaper (by £130 so a BIG saving) but I'd much prefer to buy it from JL as they have much better reputation for after-sales service and also a free two year guarantee. I asked the salesman (looked fairly senior, mature man, not one of the youngsters :D) if he would pricematch for me. He said he would but that their procedure had changed. Apparently the days when they would just ring the compteting store and check you were truthful that is was cheaper and in stock, are over. He told me to get the pricematch I'd have to pay JL's current price and fill in a form. He would then arrange verification and then I'd have to come back to the store to claim my difference back..

This seems like a lot of hassle to me and also quite risky as I wouldn't know if I was definitely getting the price match until after I'd bought the PC and taken it home.

He told me the reason for the change in policy was because their competitors will no longer tell them the information over the phone and JL have to send a member of staff to go to the competitor and check for him/herself!!!!!! I find it VERY difficult to believe that they'd do this... In my area (Cambridge) the time it would take them to get to the other side of the city and back would be well over an hour! Surely they wouldn't really do this? Has anyone else been told this by JL?

As an aside to this, I also asked him about the two year guarantee and what sort of service that included. He told me that I would have to bring the desktop back to the store for them to send it away and it would probably be gone about TEN days! I can't imagine being without my beloved PC for ten hours let alone ten days :D! Mind you, I suppose if I had a laptop as well then I'd survive! :D He said if I wanted an on-site service I'd have to buy it... same horrendous price as most other places!

  • Sales assistant is correct but you can also get them to fill out the form with the details of store and price where cheaper and they will contact the store and when the price is agreed they will write to you, usually 3/4 days. This was told to me yesterday by John Lewis CAMBRIDGE. Good Luck...

It is true. JL have a department and they MIGHT visit the store in question to confirm that the product is on display and in-stock for the price quoted by yourself.

Ring Customer Services and confirm the situation because there was an article in a newspaper last year that JL were changing their price match ruling to only match prices within a certain radius!

FYI, PCW offer 2.5% discount if bought or reserved for collection at the store through Quidco, which will take 3 months to clear. It is not much, but every little helps!

Also to take into consideration is the guarentee - JL are one of the few stores to offer 2 years and correct me if Im wrong, but PC Wordl only offer 1 year FREE guarentee. JL will probably use this and refuse to price match.

So what you might need to decide is whether you wish to save £130 or have a two year guarentee and peace of mind...

surely in this electronic age they dont have to send a personnel to check the price at another store. i'm sure they can check it online and pricematch straight away. i bought a washing machine from jl delivered yesterday. it was dear by about 30 quid compared to comet but jl declined the pricematch. i bought it from jl anyway.
    regards

They won't check online because many stores (I think Comet might be one and PCWorld definitely are) often have a different price buying instore to their online price and JL only match prices for goods available at a local store (within a certain radius. I can't find out what that distance is on their website but I've got a feeling it is somewhere between 5-30 miles).

On what basis did JL refuse to pricematch? If it was on a Comet online price I can understand as the terms on their website clearly state they don't dopricematch to online prices, but they also guarentee 'never knowingly undersold' and I was definitely told yesterday that they would check the local competitor if I filled in a form. If I were you and I lived nearby, I would check your local Comet have it instore at that price and go back to JL to ask for a refund of the difference. It's got to be worth it (unless it's miles away) in order to get £30 back.

Regarding Ray123's point of JL's extended guarentee, I am pretty sure they don't take this into account when pricematching, but I will check so thanks for that.

You can get the price match before, but its not always instant.
    Phone customer services to verify.

As for warranty, its a free feature, its irrelivent to the price match from pc world... So that does not come into.

John Lewis will price match it, if its in stock, simple as.
  • The price match radius was a trial in Scotland only.
