Why not just put me on 'ignore' if my posts wind you up so much?--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

I'd like to toot my own horn for the foresight to post on 27th March 2007 -
"We are at the top of the housing boom, when even 'bad' houses can be got shot of. Once the slide starts, the price gap from good to bad will rapidly widen and sink-estate properties will be unsaleable."
and in May 2007
"utter insanity to buy at the moment. I was looking just tonight in London at a 33sq/m studio on at....£307,000!!!! Madness!"0 -
I can't lay claim to any insightful posts at all (as mine are more chit chat and anecdotal and sometimes zzzzzzz as they are personal therapy) but the absolutely, gigantic, most hugest, thing I learnt from this board is that the HPI and HPC were symptoms of other economic factors (mainly cheap credit and the banks making neat, parcels out of it and selling it on)that I didn't ever really ever give much consideration to.
They just didn't ever flag up to me in my everyday life.
This board knitted all the elements together...and I can now read an FT (obviously concealed within an OK or Vogue for show) and pretty much understand most of it.
Stocks and shares are still a mystery....but I won't need to learn about them for a few more years. I know what I will invest in too,....but don't know how yet.
A lot of the knowledge I have learnt here has had an extremely positive effect on how I am conducting my life/ business at the mo...;paticularly as I am currently manageing a big opportunity....and am now living every day by my signature.0 -
Im not really one for told you so or hindsight geniuses but lypsey made a good point a year agoit is nothing to do with supply and demand , it is AFFORDABILITY0

I really must make time to find the Hound pearls-of-wisdom of yesteryear.
Someone found this for me by reviving the "Sub-prime Building Society" thread.
We did not pick these two Building Societies a year ago - So who is going to rescue the "Chelsea"?

Harry.
PS What is Lloyds going to pay me for my Leeds Permanent Building Society shares:rolleyes:
Update 16dec08
Halifax shares now worth very little.
Good old Chelsea BS has invested one year's profits in an Iceland bank
I can pick 'em.0 -
I didn't make any bold statements. I gave my quiet little opinion and sat in the background eating wine gums and waiting.
I am not a fighter, I am not a "told you so" person.0 -
I can't be that smug, because I can't be bothered to do lots of searching.
I did say, though:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=9498465&postcount=30...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
the lucidity of “!!!!!!/dopester”
I'm a bit worried about !!!!!!, he/she should be winning the best posting of last autumn,
(not getting into scraps with wind up merchants).
I remember going round to see someone who was having to move. He went over to his PC and said "have you seen this"? Within a few clicks, he had printed off something from the MSE forum. I could not absolutely swear it was a !!!!!! posting but it was a set of worked figures showing that Mr Savvy who managed to buy at he bottom and die at the top, during his lifetime ended up about 1,000,000 GBP richer that old numptie, who spent his time following the heard.
I might be slightly over egging the pudding ; but the figures were impressive.
Anyway my informant has moved jobs and is happy renting something historical that he could not afford to buy from a FTL landlord. STR rules OK.
So all we need is for !!!!!! to find his nugget of wisdom.
John
PS NDG your link freezes - on my browser anyway - this must be the curse of MSE ?
PPS Pastures. Have I got to go and find one of your beautiful carefully researched postings, while you do the mouse act? Do you trust me not to edit it first?0
