advice please...

at the moment im currently working as a careworker and bring home 1000k a month after tax etc.
im seeking a carear change and wanting to get into teaching, so im thinking of applying to become a teacher asistant coz i gain certain criteria once ive done a year to try enter at a certain level when i do a degree.

The only problem is it is only 8k a year before tax man and only 26 hours a week, so firstly what im asking is, would i get much help in benifits if i did take this i.e would i get help with my rent, poll tax or anything else??
secondly i know id have to try find something else to bring up my income but its the case of what as many jobs that are part time start at 9 or 3 and with this being a school teacher asistant schools dont finish til 3.30 >.<

my main concern is to keep on providing and putting roof over my wifes head, anyone know how much id be able to claim or anything??

You could get a part-time job in the evening? I work 9-5pm and still have a second job, I work in a shop from 6-10pm but you could do bar work, shop work, some call centres have evening shifts.

    Could your wife not work?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Don't forget to allow enough time to study, unless you already have the entrance qualifications you will need for a degree and teaching qualification.
  • If you do the teaching degree it is full on and you will find it impossible to work part time and study. I would echo on what DMG has said is there any reason why your wife can't work?
  • if you wanted a job with those flexible hours ect... why dont you go and work for an agency maybe doing care work which you do now as they are always looking, and you have experience- then you pick up shifts as and when you want them and they tend to have more flexible hours and not too bad pay!! :j hopefully that could fit around being a teaching assistant??
:jTrying to save as much as i can :T

  • If your a qualified care worker, and you like care work, would you consider teaching Health and Social care? If so, contact your local college and see if you can apply to be an hourly paid (Or employed on a casual basis - hours may vary) lecturer in Health and social care. Some colleges wont ask for you to be an already qualified teacher, as they will put you on a course to become qualified. Then you would be in a good position to apply for a full time permenant role. Might be worth a try.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

Just what I was going to suggest - there are always ads in the local paper for domiciliary care agencies who want people usually evenings and weekends which would fit in ideally with you working in a school during the day.
  • i work in care- but with people with learning disabilities and know that there are loads of agencies taking on- or even depending on what type of care work you do you could sign up as a "relief" member or staff with a care organisation- plenty of people do that for the company i work for. hope this helps :T

  • thank you all for the valued input, my wife does work, she works as a sales asistant but can only do 26hrs a week as she has a heart condition.

As for entry levels on the degree, i phoned around and because of my age i can go under something called life skills and do my degree and teaching qualification at same time, if i do course part time it takes 5-6 years, of which i know is a long time, but something i really wanna do, as im fed up with care tbh, as carework is not what it used to be and surrounded by polices and procedures, like all jobs but even more so.

By doing a teaching asistant role, i get valuable experiance, plus if i do over 1 year of it, i dont have to do a post graduate course of 1year once qualified as ive already done it with experiance i gain from doing this.

Thats why im in this little dilema, ive never claimmed anything before but was seeking advice, i know best time to work in care is weekends and nights, and am actually weighing up the hours in care i have to do, if i change my work patten to make money earning atm.
