Barclays bank account

We are looking at going down the IVA/Bankrupcy option. (not started the process yet, sadly it is inevitable) As we have large overdrafts on our accounts having read through a couple of threads about Barclays I've noticed that before paying Direct debits out (such as the mortgage/council tax) when Barclays get wind of whats happening they will seize my husbands salary. Therefore, we thought about moving to a different bank (if they will have us given the debts) and opening an account to pay his salary into can anyone offer us any advice on how we do this please? Can we go via internet banking I feel so ashamed walking into a branch. Thought about egg but we owe them also!

There's a list of basic bank accounts somewhere, and a list of which banks are linked to each other so that you can open one with someone not linked to a bank you owe money to. I don't know where it is, it could be the national debtline site, but I'm sure someone will come along soon with a link.

From what I remember when I was looking at bankruptcy, you can only have a basic account - one with no cheque book, debit card or overdraft. The OR will freeze it, but if it's only a bank account he'll unfreeze it. But then it's up to the bank whether they keep you as a customer when you're bankrupt, so it's a good idea to tell them your plans when opening it. That's what I was told anyway.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • I opened a basic Natwest Step Account on line. It was all fairly simple and was set up quite quickly. Alternatively, Co-op do a cashminder account which you can open over the phone.

    Good luck.

  • Get a co-op cashbuilder account, visa maestro card, internet banking, standing orders and direct debits, no overdraft, perfect.

I set mine up over the phone in 5 mins, no tough questions, they asked why I was opening the account and i said i was just re-organising my finances, no problems, all done quickly, received all cards, logons etc within 7 days, salary is paid in now without a problem
