Moving to Inverness, local shops: fishmonger? butcher? deli? greengrocer? veg boxes?

Hello!

I am contemplating moving to Inverness for 6 months for a change of scenery, cheaper rental than Edinburgh and good access to the hills for winter hillwalking. I know Inverness is 'Tesco town' but are there any good local shops still surviving? I eat a lot of fish so a good fishmonger would be nice as would a decent local butcher, greengrocer or veg box scheme, etc

Also any areas of town to avoid when looking for a place to rent? I don't drive so need to be near some form of public transport but would consider a rural location if it was on a bus route.

Any places to look for rentals (apart from Gumtree)

Any ways to meet people (I don't know anyone there!) hillwalking clubs or general social clubs.....

Thanks! :D

  • Duncan Fraser butchers in queens gate is generally the best in town.
There aren't many fishmongers in inverness but i know the port soy fishmonger delivers to inverness.

There are a couple of farm shops in the area and in the high street every few weeks there is a farmers market.

    Try www.hspc.co.uk for renting.
Or the inverness courier (local paper out on tuesdays and fridays) www.inverness-courier.co.uk
It also has ads for local groups.
The press and journal is a daily paper but you need to get the highland edition and not the moray or aberdeen editions.

Most areas have good bus routes if you are looking for nice walks but good bus routes go for Culloden.
Scourguie, highfield, cradle hall, westhill, inches wood and the town are all nice too. But avoid the Ferry and Hilton. No offence to anyone who lives there but some bits which are a bit rough.

The ICA (inverness city advertiser) is a free booklet that is delivered to most houses and workplaces once a month with almost all local events and goings on listed.

    good luck

couldn't agree more with Macc. Inverness area is great. the town itself is fine with really good music & thetre venues, not so good restaurants, regrdless of what they actually think, (too complacent with the one off tourists) As for where to live, MacC is probably right, although I wouldn't live too far out of town. Walking distance else you may not avail of the facilities ven if they are only a mile away (I know a mile isn't far but it is hilly up here.

Have a great time. You may never head South again!!

Personally I'd avoid Smithton/Culloden/Milton of leys etc. They have pretty good bus links but about the most you have within 30mins walk is a corner shop

Macleods do veg boxes etc - http://www.macleodorganics.com/

I would guess most properties for rent end up in the courier, and single rooms in shop windows etc
  • Hi - I live near Inverness and it is a great place to live.
Its not always easy getting to know people, unless you work. I found I have got to know loads of people through voluntary work. Also I run a walking group - which you'd be welcome to join!!!

If you need to know anything else - just ask!

    Cheers

  • Here's another web site for rentals

    http://www.residential-property-scotland.co.uk/letting_north/index.html

    This is one of the better ones as it has properties to let from lots of agents and it's usually kept quite up to date;

We moved to Inverness from Glasgow in Jan and absolutely love it, the kids have all settled in school and my husband and I in work. Our pace of life is less and we are all more relaxed.

I hope everything works out well for you and you are able to get moved.

PS : RachieDee could I trouble you to send me across the info also re the walking group you belong too
    Its a jungle out there...
