Abbey have put defaults on my record but never told me I was in default

Sorry, it is a bit of a long explanation.
I had a Student account with Abbey National, which was then converted to a graduate account on graduation in 2003.
I got a job immediately and had the first month's pay put into the Abbey account. I then opened a Smile account (as it then gave me a better rate on my ISA), had my salary paid into it, cleared out the Abbey account so it was 65p off my limit and stopped using the Abbey account.
The plan was to put the money into a savings account and earn money on it, as the overdraft was interest free. I knew that my pay should go into the account but planned to do it until they said to stop, then I would clear the overdraft and close the account.
In June this year I was sent a letter that said I was in breach of the terms, as I wasn't using the account, so I cleared the overdraft by the end of the month.
I have now got my credit file and it shows defaults of 3+ months as 15 on the Abbey account. This is obviously a huge blot on my otherwise perfect record.
They sent me statements every month but never said that I was in default and never said I was breaching the T&Cs, the first time they complained was in June this year.
What is the best way to get Abbey to remove the defaults, bearing in mind they never told me I was in default?
I know the address to write to, it is really what to tell them. I don't think you should be classed as being in default for 15 months when they don't tell you.
Thank you for your help.

Write to them. Also write to the credit file people and ask them to put a notice on your credit file.0
