Paying somebody elses debt!!

Hi to all,
My first time so be gentle! My Fiance, who I have been with for 3 years, had a joint account with her ex. When they split they also split their debts between them and each got loans to pay them off (which my fiance did, her ex didn't!). He was responsible for paying off the joint bank account but 4 years on he still hasn't bothered. We have tried to get my fiance's name taken off the bank account (to be fair to her ex he has signed a form with the bank to say the debt is his and that my fiance's name should be removed from the account - it's the bank who are being awkward). We have even offered to pay off half of the account to have her name removed but the bank still won't accept this so it looks like we will have to pay the full amount (which we can't really afford having already payed off half of thir original debts already).
anybody else been thru this?
Please help!
