Bikes

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on where would be the best place in Belfast/surrounding areas to buy a decent bike for my boyfriend? The only main issue is that he needs a large frame as he is 6 foot 6!! So prob 23 inch frame.

At the moment we have visited halfords/bike dock and been quoted £270 - £300 for that size of frame.

Any ideas would be welcome (as have only recently moved to Belfast and dont know many good bike shops!)

Thanks in advance

If you check with your employer ask if he is a signed up member, or willing to sign up to the cycle to work scheme. If he is willing or is already a member, you are entitled to a 50% reduction in the cost of the bikes plus the cost is taken out of your wages on a weekly basis, from the deduted tax. So it's only costing a few pounds each week, really worth looking into. There is a website:

  • My husband bought a new bike from Dave Kane's shop on the Upper Newtownards Rd. He was happy with the price and said they were really helpful. http://www.davekanecycles.com/index.php

I would also advise you to go to Dave Kane cycles. I cycle a bit and have used the shop for years. Really genuine people and lots of back up if you have any problems. I bought a kids bike for my son from halfords and regretted it from the minute we got home, bike not assembled correctly and when we brought it back nobody knew how to fix it. This would never happen in Dave Kane's. They are ex-professional cyclists so know the business and have lots of bikes ranging from 100's to 1000's
  • Chain Reaction are the largest online store in Europe (I think), based in Doagh.

There's a decent shop on Ravenhill Rd. Can't remember the name, but they have a really good selection.

stay clear of McConvey cycles as they are overpriced and I found them very unhelpful.
  • Thanks for all your replies.

Ended up visiting a few places and Bike Dock on the bottom of ravenhill rd gave us the best deal and were very helpful.

So well pleased with price & bike!

    Thanks
  • Ahh yes Bikeock thats the place. Glad you got sorted.
  • Got sorted but then had it a week and has now been stolen out of a security car park - lock cut off with bolt cutters!!

We have given up - it was vandalised and then stolen within one week of being bought!!!

    Thats city life for ya!!

That's really rotten! Sometimes I think you're better off with an old second-hand bike. My husband bought a new one- as I posted earlier- and he locks it up like the Crown Jewels! I have an old thing that cost £25, so if it gets stolen I wouldn't be that bothered! Sorry you didn't even get a chance to enjoy your new bike.

How annoying! I got two bikes stolen already in Belfast...
Then ended up buying a second hand one from what used to be called lifecycles- used to be based at Smithfield Markets, but moved to the Lawrence Workshops in Lawrence street, off university road. Very helpful and friendly, - bikes get delivered from England so have to wait a few days.
This might be too late for you if you have given up on bikes...
