Tracing an old Pension

Using the Gateway service, on line, I have realised I opted out of SERPS, some years ago.

Payment is being made to a private pension scheme that only ran for a few months, then I stopped payments.

Over time I had forgoten about opting out.

I have no details of the Pension scheme. Can anybody advise a way of tracing this.

I then need to decide if to start paying into SERPS again, I know the name has changed.

Also, would it be possible to transfer the payments that have been made into the private scheme back into my SERPS scheme? Or I may consider re starting the old pension if possible.

I am of an age where I need to start thinking of getting a good scheme together but funds make this difficult so I need to make the best of what I have in place already.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Martin

As you don't have details of your old pension, I don't think the usual route for tracing a pension (through the pension service) would work. You could try the contracted out helpline at NICO (part of HMRC) on 084591 50150. If they don't know who they are paying your NI rebate to, then we're all in trouble!

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
