Where is Caramel set?
a beauty salon
In Beirut, five women meet and work together in a beauty salon, a colourful and sensual microcosm of the city where several generations come to talk and confide in each other.
Beautiful Layal (Nadine Labaki) is oblivious to the gaze of a local admirer and instead fixates on a married man. Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri) is soon to be married, but is afraid her fianc! will discover he isn’t her first lover. Rima (Joanna Moukarzel) is tormented by her attraction to women, particularly one of her stunning, dark-haired customers. Jamale (Gisèle Aouad) is an aspiring actress and refuses to grow old. Rose (Siham Haddad) has sacrificed her life to take care of her elderly sister and is overwhelmed when she discovers love for the first time.
Between haircuts and sugar waxing with caramel, their intimate and liberated conversations revolve around men, sex and motherhood. As the women from different generations share in each others experiences and emotions, the beauty parlour becomes a colourful hub of friendship and wisdom. A true gem of a film, Caramel weaves a charming tale of life with a soft emotional centre that will leave a lingering sweet taste in your mouth long after the credits roll.
