Front door insulation

Hello,

I have a wooden front door that is letting a lot of cold air in / heat out.

My wife wants to get a double glazed door (like everyone else on the street!!!!), but I'm not too keen on forking out £600/700 on this.

Anyone have any experience with insulating existing doors?

I remember when I was a kid my grandparents had a big snake thing that they lay at the foot of the door when it was shut! Things must have moved on since then hopefully!!!!

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Duncan

  • I would think its the gaps letting in the draft rather than double glazing that is your first priority. There are a number of DIY products available at B&Q or other outlets for draft proofing that can be stuck or tacked to the door frame. I suggest you have a look round and see which you think is the right blend of quality, cost and ease of installation.
  • Bought D/G door with glass at B&Q for £150 approx 1 year ago.
Cost me £80 for someone to install.
Obviously you have to do all the measurements but it has been worth it to us for insulation and security.
  • I have the draft proofing snake!!!! Don't do it, all I seem to do is moan at the kids to put it back!
  • Hang a heavy duty curtain in front of the door (on the inside!) - it works for us,

From my experince Upvc doors arent all that well insulated, they quite thin in parts, the only thing the only thing that have that is positive about them is if its got glass that double glazed and they have better security usually and better sealed so less drafts. I have a very good quality front door too so it isnt the cheap end of teh market as I replaced the whole front of teh house from old style upvc to a higher spec for noise reduction and had to go for top of the range.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for all the advice.

I went to Focus at the weekend and got some insulating strip that I put up yesterday, and it seems to have immediately improved the situation.

There's still some draught coming through so I might go for the heavy curtain option - sounds like a good idea.

And yeh, the snake is not an option! My 3 year old already spends half the time jumping from behind corners with a pretend bat (animal not cricket) and going WAAAAAH!, so introducing a snake into the equation wouldn't be wise!

    Thanks again.
