i bought some of these patches cos i often get coldsores. they are in no way invisible! haha and after about a day the edges come unstuck and you're left with a strange plastic disk welded to your lip and it hurts to get the thing off.

maybe it was just me... but i didnt like them.

plain old alcohol is the best cure! just dab it on a few times a day

Mine came a while back :)
  • yeah, i put lipstick over the top and it settled in the gap around the edge and made it look worse. also, my other half cant wear lippy so wouldnt work for him. but if it works for you then brilliant. i hate getting cold sores and like in that advert, you sometimes feel like walking about with a helmet on!

its worth applying for the sample and seeing how u get on with the. guess it works better for others. i think i lick my lips too much! haha

    Hi!

Just felt I had to do my opinionated thing here, as I suffer horribly from cold sores (herpes - the gift that keeps on giving). Be careful with those compeed patches!

Compeed patches are NOT A CURE for cold sores. There is no cure for cold sores. Once you have herpes, the virus continues to live in your nerve endings for ever, and cold sores will appear when you're stressed, run down, ill, or most likely when you've got an important event to attend or a hot date!

Compeed patches do not contain aciclovir, which is the antiviral drug used to treat the herpes virus. So you might as well stick sellotape on your cold sore.

They're not invisible (even with my glasses off, and I have appalling vision), and you can feel it all the time, so it just draws your attention back to your cold sore (as if you weren't already worrying about it enough).

Every time I've used these, a tiny blister has rapidly grown to exactly the size and shape of the patch, suggesting that instead of treating the cold sore, it's actually spreading it.

So as you can tell, I hate these patches! But I thought I'd better offer you some useful advice, that you'll find corroborated on various websites if you can be bothered to do the googling!

Prevention! Cold sores can triggered by an amino acid called arginine. This is present in large amounts in foods such as nuts and chocolate. Google for a list of high arginine foods and avoid them. It's also in a lot of lip-plumping creams, so avoid those too.

Conversely, an amino acid called Lysine helps prevent viral activity in the body. So try to eat foods high in lysine, but also take lysine supplements (available from health food stores). 1000mg a day normally, and 3000mg a day during an attack.

As soon as you notice a cold sore coming on, hold ice cubes on it. For some reason, it slows down the development of blisters. And once it gets to the gross weeping stage, clean it with salt water several times a day. Salt kills everything by drawing out the water from organisms - this includes viruses and bacteria, so this will prevent infection.

Aloe vera gel can also help. Try growing your own, it's great as the plants keep breeding and refuse to die!

Also, check the pound shop. Lots of the time, they sell the aciclovir cream for £1, which is normally £6 in Boots. And if you go to Europe on holiday, ask for it at the pharmacy and stock up if it's cheap. Here, you get 2g of the cream for £6, but when I went to Tenerife (of course I got a cold sore on holiday!), I got a huge tube of it for slightly less money.

    And always use sunscreen.

Anyway, hopefully I've saved you money (in a roundabout way) by helping you spend less on overpriced antiviral creams and dubious compeed patches...

    ;)
