  • Hi,

Good news - the mortgage company although not able to let them take on the mortgage are happy for them to make payments and have said that they will not or can not evict them for so long as one of the children remains a minor. So son and DIL are going to make the interest payments on the loan which will reduce the amount owing when they do sell the house.

Thank you all for your help - I have passed on your kind messages.

    Happy Christmas to all moneysavers.

    Amethyst.
  • Am really glad to hear that. :j

Perhaps you can introduce them to this site and encourage them to post a state of affairs. Everyone will be more than happy to see if they can help them save money! (will be very surprised if we can't). ;)

Wish them all the best and hope to see them on here soon. :D

    Hi Amethyst :)

Just been reading thru the thread and you and your family have my sympathies. My father died when I was a teenager and this led to our family losing the house shortly afterwards.

I've seen nothing about the children's father so far. Is he still alive? If so, is he aware that the children have lost their mother? Could he help financially?

They have approximately £30K debts and have asked all lenders to take a full & final settlement.

Alliance & Leicester will not agree to a settlement, they want a payment to bring them up to date and then resume normal payments. Their attitude is it's not their problem and they will have money when don't have to pay council tax etc. however they still have to feed & clothe 6.
Amethyst – you haven’t exactly stated the nature of the £30k debt. Credit cards? Loans? Is it secured on any asset or all unsecured? Is it in your son’s name, DIL’s name or a joint debt? I’ll presume the £30k is all unsecured debt.

If CCCS have been involved, they should’ve sent out a “Self Help” Guide to Debt – an absolutely invaluable booklet detailing your priority and non-priority debts, and the penalties for failing to pay particular types of debts.

In your comment above re A & L, their comment about not having to pay council tax is a load of bull, as that can have truly dire consequences – whereas the very worst that can happen with not paying a credit card/unsecured overdraft or unsecured loan is that you’ll end up in court.

A & L are looking out for No 1 – and so should your son and DIL. :)

If A & L will not accept a Full & Final settlement, then so be it, the worst they could do is take son & DIL to court, where the judge will order them to repay a reasonable amount each month.

That's all the practical advice I can think of for now, and a big pat on the back to you for taking them in and helping in a terrible time. :)

    Kind regards
    Dave

I am so glad to hear about the house and mortgage. Now that that is sorted, let us hope that their financial problems can be tackled, with a satisfactory outcome.

Again....my best wishes to all of you.

  • Hi All,

Sorry I haven't been in touch - lots has happened this year.

Son & DIL have had a little boy (just to add to the mayhem which is their home!) they are still in the mum's house and are paying all the bills.

A & L sent their debt out to debt agency - still only getting £10 a month payment!

bham-dave, in answer to your question the childrens father died the year previous to their mum (they were divorced & there was no contact). All the debt was unsecured on son & DIL part the only joint debt was the A & L, and yes CCCS were very helpful.

After everything they have gone through in their first year of marriage they are a very strong family of 7 now!

Thanks for all your kind and helpful messages.

  • Oh Amethyst, I've just read thsi thread from start to finish. Wow, what a year. My goodness, how proud you must be of your son and DIL, and such lucky children, after all the tragedy in their lives, to live with people who care for them so.

You know what, I think you, or they, shoudl contact a mag to tell their story. It's the kind of stuff they like, tragic, scary etc., but ultimately, heart warming. It would also serve as a warning to others to ensure they have adequate insurance, and a kick up the bum to A&L, as they have been such stinkers!

I do hope theis family continue to go from strength to strength, they so deserve it. And a big well done to you, for all you've done to help and support them.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
  • Brilliant to hear from you Amethyst! :D

    Congratulations on the grandchild!

If you or they need anymore advice don't hesitate to post! :)

If you DIL wants any clothes for the baby then don't forget https://www.freecycle.org. It is amazing what you can get on there for free! Well done for persevering with it all.
I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
