Try your local Tescos, they often run free eye test promotions. I got 2 pairs of specs (1 pair sunglasses) for £80 earlier in the year...... and clubcard points!
Ah ha, thanks, you've just given me a thought, my local ASDA do eye tests, I'll call them.

    Cheers ;)

Bear in mind you get what you pay for.

Purchase the cheapest possible spectacles from the cheapest possible supplier, you'll get the lowest possible quality. Same with any product.

One has to go where their money takes them, I'm amazed by the amount of people who've changed from shopping at Tesco in preference to Aldi / Lidl / Netto.

Sign of the times I guess.

Depends what you need the glasses for. If it's just because your arms have shrunk (also known as middle aged myopia!) then you may be OK with just off the shelf reading glasses, which is what my optician suggested for me. They didn't mind when I said I'd get them elsewhere, since you can pick them up for £1 upwards in some places, and in the optician their cheapest pairs were a lot more expensive!

Now, I know you get what you pay for, but at - say - £5 per pair I can afford to have a pair of reading glasses wherever I might need them: at work, in my bag, by my bed, in the dining room (for the gravy packet!), in the lounge (for the TV pages!) Oh, and a 'strong' pair for mapreading in the car, not when I'm driving, obviously.

Also if it's 'just' MAM, then improving the light you're reading by can work wonders ...

But get the eye test first.

If I can find a previous thread about cheap eye tests, I'll merge ...

As you see, I found the thread I was thinking of. Did you also see Andrea's post about free eye tests at Tesco? And do you use a VDU at work? If so, find out what your employer does. See this thread.

    Hi SS :hello:

Thanks for the post, I think its reading glasses I require, I’m finding it almost impossible to read small print, at present I use a magnifying glass :rotfl:

The other issue I have, at work we have overhead fluorescent lights, which are a real strain on my eyes  I’m constantly having headaches from them, I know it’s the lights because I never suffer with headaches when I’m away from work, I want some glasses that can react to the lights

I've arranged an eye test at my local ASDA only £15.00 :j I try not to shop at Tesco if I can help it, but that's another story :p:D

An optician is an optician though, regardless of who employs them.

True. However, an optometrist who is told by their employer that the company is going to offer fee examinations may feel as though their time/expertise is being valued at exactly nil. Therefore they will probably provide you with a "bog standard" examination or at least be reluctant to spend any real time with the patient.

I would encourage people to pay properly for their examinations.
