Nationwide mortgage overpayment problem

I'm having a real issues with some Nationwide mortgage overpayments I made last week and I don't know where to turn or what to do next and hoping that someone here might have some advice.

On the 1st Sept, my mortgage product changed from a fixed rate to the standard variable product which allows unlimited overpayments, so I made 3 payments of £10,000 on Monday 1st, Tuesday and Thursday, via internet banking from my Lloyds current account to the account & sort code specified by Nationwide with the relevant reference number (my mort account number).

The money left my Lloyds current account, but have now been returned. When I queried this with Lloyds, they said the money was returned because the account I was trying to send the money does not exist. When I queried with Nationwide, they say they have no record that any such money was received at all and their only answer is that I must have put the details in wrong.

I have triple checked with Nationwide, Lloyds and my own records and am adament that I had the details correct. Neither of the banks will admit there is a mistake, and I have lost out because the interest saving I was trying to realise by making the overpayments has been lost.
I don't know who else to talk to or what to do next as there seems to be a lack of information anyone can tell me...

Anyone have any clever advice on how I can proceed?

Many thanks!!!! :)

to make payments to nationwide you have to put their sort code and bank account number, then the account you are trying to pay into goes in the reference box

have you ever made payments via internet banking to nationwide before?

could it possibly be because of the 'anti fraud' process... ie your payment was larger than 5K?
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • robnye, yep that's what I did... and I have crossed checked with Lloyds and Nationwide that I put in the correct info and I did 100%, but somehow the payments bounced and Lloyds just say the return note says the account doesn't exist and Nationwide says they have not received any such payments whatsoever. I don't know how else the payment can be tracked?

The limit for internet bank transactions is 10k - hence the 3 separate payments to total 30k.

Do you have a print out of the sort code etc as you tried to make the payment to?? ( I know I would have taken screen shots or print out for that amount x 3 transactions)

If so copy it and send it to the nationwide for verification that it is correct.

Then ring them once they have the information and see what they say.

  • I don't have a printout unfortunately (although I expect nationwide would just say I could have created it at anytime)... I went into a Lloyds branch and asked if they could supply some proof that a payment was made but all they could offer is a statement printout, but the statement does not have details of payment sort codes, acc nos & ref nos etc.

So frustrating. I know I can just make the payment again but I've lost over a week's interest at these high rates = about £50 so not insignificant!
  • Write a cheque.

When you're sorted try and claim the lost interest back..
