Seems that there is the trade off between warmth - thick curtains, block all gaps, etc, - and condensation - pools of water running down walls, mould everywhere. I only put the heating on if I absolutely have to, but all windows are opened in the morning and wiped down to deal with the condensation, and the walls are bleached every week to deal with the mould.

The council said I have to keep my windows open all year round and that the vents are not to be covered under any circumstances. Like to see them live somewhere where the water runs down into the power sockets at night and the mould grows ever closer to my breathing machine.

Sorry, all I can suggest is wear more clothes and mop the walls.

Bleach kills only active micro-organisms; anything that can form a spore (some bacteria and most fungi) has the capacity to 'hibernate'. Mould killer should be much more economical as it will destroy all of the mould spores. Should be economical in the long run as it will take a while for a reinfection to occur from the spores in the air.

If you have a problem with mould and water running down the wall then it is hazardous to health: you must get the place dried out. Have the council checked that you don't have a rising or penetrating damp problem rather than condensation?

  • Can anyone tell me if there is much difference in thermal linigs for curtains? I've had a quick peek on eBay and they're all just under a generic 'thermal lining'. Is there anything in particular I should look out for? It's for a door just inside my front door. The hall way is always freezing even if the heat has been on a while.
I was also thinking of sewing some of the multifoil insulation into the lining. Does this sound like overkill? Im doing curtains for our bedroom upstairs which is beside a road. It's cold too but noise is also a factor. Thought with lining and some insulation inside i might sort it out. What do you think?
