Hi La Fenice (are you italian? the name is!),

We eat panettone as it is, in great big slices, straight from the pack sometimes! In fact I no longer buy it much earlier than a couple of days in advance of Xmas because my family would finish it all at once as it comes through the door!

I don't know anything about pink goo, sorry!

One nice way to serve panettone is to cut the top and scoop the inside, which you can scoff as you scoop or use crumbs later for bread pudding, and fill the inside of the panettone with ice cream.

Make sure that you leave fairly thick walls and that the ice cream is packed tight, then put the lid on and slice vertically, and serve as a 'semifreddo', which is a warm (room temperature) pud or cake with some ice cream in it.

Hope you like it, I might just do that this Xmas!

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Ooooh yes!

Now that sounds really good...think will do that instead of Xmas Pud this year, would be much lighter...maybe with a slug dash of amaretto.... ;D

Greek main course...Italian pud....now I just need a starter for a really cosmopolitan Xmas Day lunch :D
    Nice to save.

  • Thanks Caterina, some great ideas there  :D

By the way....how do you serve Panettone?  I've bought it a couple of times cos it looks sooo nice in the fancy box, but it usually hangs around for weeks and then gets used in a bread & butter pudding....seems a bit of a waste really.  Had it served for Xmas Day lunch in Italy a long time ago and vaguely remember some pink goo coming with it?  ???
it's usually served with a plain fruit sauce basically made from whisking fresh/frozen fruit with castor sugar, rasberries and cranberries are great and christmassy
Named after my cat, picture coming shortly

thanks percy.....so I wasn't imagining it then....'fruit sauce' sounds so much more appetising than 'pink goo' ::)
    Nice to save.

The vegetarian society has a page of links with over ten years worth of christmas recipes here: http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/recipes/christmas.html including caribbean, thai and traditional.

    Hope this helps
