    I discovered this when I was pregnant and claiming MA.

    If you are employed and claiming SMP, you can do self employed work without it affecting your SMP pay.

    However if you are self employed and claiming MA, you can't do any paid work whatsoever (apart from the 10 keeping in touch days).

    I thought it was a tad unfair to have different rules, especially as an employed woman has rights to walk back into the same salary when the SMP ends, but a self employed woman often goes back to work on a lower income as you have to rebuild your client base.
