Can they do this?

Hi everyone,
About 4 years ago, I bought a cooker from Littlewoods for my flat. Paid by switch no problem never got any further correspondance from them and moved house 6 months later. Got a credit report last year and found they had credit checked me and set up a credit account! Wrote to Littlewoods and luckily the people who moved in after me had been decent people and had sent back mail saying I wasn't there. I could have had a nasty shock. As it was I didn't think anyone could set up a credit account without my permission it had a 2 grand credit limit so someone could have had some fun!
Can they do this as it makes me concerned about purchases as I have to move a lot at present for work. I don't want to be checking my file every few months. However as a financial fraud investigator if something happened I could be suspended while it gets sorted out, as defaulting on payments is classed as gross misconduct.
Incidently in the flat i'm in a received a letter for the lady who used to live here, she left no forwarding address and the envelope was one with no return details. I put it in my shredder and it stuck - because inside there was an Asda storecard, unsigned and ready to use with a £250 limit. She moved out 7 months ago and i've returned all the mail I could. Scary. It seems as much as we try to protect ourselves they try and ruin us. I cut the card up and wrote to Asda, they haven't responded.

They can't set up a credit account without your signature, no. On the basis that (fortunately) it seems to have not done you any harm, i would ensure that the account is closed down (if it isn't already), and treat it as a cautionary tale.
If you had suffered in any way, i would have been demanding a copy of the credit agreement that you'd signed from them.0
