Halifax Mortgage advice please

My husband always said that if anything happened to him that the mortgage would get paid off as we have a joint account and we have had the mortgage on this house for 10 years. In November he fell ill and claimed off the mortgage repayments for sickness, which has been fine. Sadly last sunday he passed away and although i am gutted these things still have to be sorted and i phoned them up only to be told it was for just sickness and not life cover. They said to go to Halifax building society, which i did with all the relevant paperwork. First the woman said they were only quotes, she rang somebody up and said we had cancelled it 2 months after we moved in. But that dosnt sound right. You can't cancell a quote, can you. The only thing i remember cancelling is the home contents insurance. Are they pulling a fast one and dont want to pay out. I am so confused. Hope i've made sense.

I'm sorry for your loss, the last thing you need at a time like this is more stress so hopefully you will get it sorted.

You can't cancel a quote but it us just that, a quote. Did you or your husband agree to it and actually sign up for the policy? Can you find any actual policy documents?

My sincerest sympathies. I can barely guess at how you must be feeling.

They won't be pulling a fast one, but you do need to get them to explain, clearly and in writing, what has happened with the policy.

Why, they need to explain, has it turned from a quote in to a policy in to being canceled, yet still managed to pay out on the redundancy element?

How was it canceled? Was it never put in to place, replaced with an accident/sickness/redundancy only policy or put in place and premiums not paid? Has somebody made a call to cancel one type of cover and it has been interpreted as a cancellation of this important cover?

Ask Halifax for answers, or ask a supportive relative to pursue this for you - give them a signed and written authority to ask for this on your behalf.

Also, check the bank statements. Are there any other life assurance policies being paid for by direct debit? Did your husband's employer offer death in service benefits? Did he belong to a trade union who may also be able to offer support?

Out of interest, who is the insurer? Is it Halifax Insurance Ireland, Halifax Life or some other company?

Thanks for your replies. Yes, it was with Halifax Ireland for the sickness, but i am 99% sure we had life cover with Halifax Building Society. I have a detailed document with all the facts of our details but like i said she said it was a quote one minute then phoned someone who said we cancelled. I shall be taking your advice and ask for copies of any letters or documents they sent, or we sent them.

    Thanks again for your replies.
