Payment History To Moorcroft

Evening All,
I paid a cheque to the moorcroft group in September 2004 and I am currently being pursued by a different collections agency for the same amount.
I contacted moorcroft this afternoon as I need to know who the original debt was referred to them by. As naturally i want to make sure the debt hasnt been duplicated.
Moorcroft told me that they could not give me that information as I dont have a reference number (its been 4 years, i'm sure not many people would) and that I couldnt acquire this info at all without it!
Does anyone know if this is true or should i go to the financial ombudsman service and ask them to flex it for me?
Thanks for reading!

That is complete twaddle.
Write to Moorcroft with a "subject access request" (cost £10) and under the Data protection Act, they must send a copy of all information they hold on you. They have 40 days to provide this detail.
If the other collection agency contacts you, tell them the debt is in dispute.
This pdf explains SAR's a little more.

IF Moorcroft no longer hold that information (which i doubt - they should have some record of the transaction), then you may want to enquire who this new company got the debt from. ie if they bought it from Moorcroft. If they bought it from the original creditor then i would contact them about whether Moorcroft forwarded the payment to them or if the debt was sold to Moorcroft. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
