    I have just opened another letter, this time from a solicitors, stating that if I don't contact them within 72 hours with a repayment proposal, they will advise 'their client' to issue a claim for recovery in the county court.

    Hello Burv, it is really up to you - personally I would contact them and try to come up with an acceptable repayment programme - explain that you are on a limited income, on social, and can literally only afford x amount a week / month.

    I'm not sure how it works with benefits, but i think there are some that should not be included in working out how much income you have available to give to creditors.
