Can anyone advise me on a debt that is statute barred?

Hi,
My husband is being chased for a debt in the region of £12K. We have had confirmation from the company that £6500 of this debt is statue barred. The debt dates back to 1997 and the company only contacted my husband regarding it in October 2006. They are now demanding full payment. I have read about the statue of limitations act and I am aware that the debt can not be recovered legally however I do not know what powers the debt collection agency has. Also it we offered to pay the part of the debt that was not statue barred i.e £5500 would this be seen as an admission of liability for the whole debt?
I would be very grateful for any help
Many thanks

Hi
Very confused.
How is it that part of the debt is statute barered and part not affected by the Statute of Limitations? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Although the debt dates back to 1997 some of it is as recent as 2003. This is why not all is statue barred. The debt is to the CSA. My husband was making regular payments to his ex-wife and then paid a lump sum of £10500 so the payments stopped. We had regular statements from the CSA confirming nothing was owed and we heard nothing else from them between 2002-2006. He then got a letter advising the £10500 could not be taken into account as child maintenance and he must pay £10305.00 in arrears. They then added a further £2000 for the period 2003-2006. My husband has now begun making regular payments again as requested and never missed any. The csa have confirmed in writing that £6500 is statue barred but they have also told us they can chase this through a debt agency if he doesn't agree to pay.0
