satisfied judgement - whats the point??

howdy,
Newbie here, so sorry if i am in the wrong place :-)
quick question - what it the point of satisfying a CCJ? I ask this because i received a CCJ for £170 in Feb 2006. This was satisfied in november of the same year.
this one satisfied CCJ is causing me nothing but grief!! can't even open another bank account! i have a couple of credit cards, a catalogue and an overdraft with my current bank (whom i am trying to move away from!) all paid up to date etc
I just called First direct ref my applicaiton and as experian said there was "Something adverse" on my report they can't offer an account! so seems to me that when a company does a credit check they dont bother to ever check the status of a CCJ - just the fact that there is/was one there!
found this to be the case with a few things i have applied for over the last 6 months -- and no, not over-applying :-)
is there anything anybody can do about this? or do i have to wait until its 6th birthday before getting my life back!
cheers in advance
