low cost waterproofing

I have previously bought some expensive products to re-waterproof tents and clothes, and a friend of mine said as a low cost option you could use car dashboard spray from a pound shop as it contains silicon. I wondered if anyone knew if this was correct, or if not are there any low cost alternatives?

    If you play the web quiz on the Nikwax website ( http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/index.php ) you get a free pouch of reproofing tech wash, sign up for a few different names and you'll get enough to reproof all your kit. I certainly wouldn't suggest trying any cheap alternatives, not on good quality kit anyway, it's just not worth it.

    Keep checking around though, there's ALWAYS ways of getting sample sachets of Nikwax tech wash.

    it's a wax that is used to waterproof a tent, I wouldn't put dashboard spay on it especially if its an expensive tent IMHO
    Its about £5 a can in my local shop.
