Credit Checks and Renting

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help me......

I have been on a Debt Management Plan since July this year.
Around 80% of creditors have accepted but I have been given around 4 defaults along the way.

I currently rent a property and the rent per month is Huge! I want to reduce it so I can pay more into my DMP. I am now looking at houses.

I am a bit worried about the credit checks that letting agents do.

I have been doing some research and as far as I can see, they only check to see if you have CCJs or are Bankrupt - which neither apply to me.

Up until my DMP 3 months ago, I had been struggling to keep up with all my min payments and had been doing so and had not missed any.

Can anyone let me know what they actually look for and should I be worried?
Also, I have always paid my rent on time.

Thank you

  • ive not been in your position, however i think if you come up against any problems and you explained your situation and got a reference from your current landlord they may be more understanding that you think :)

I hope so, I even thought about mentioning it first - but at the moment, the rental market is so busy and lots of people looking for rentals, I did not want to give them an excuse to reject me before I get of the starting blocks!

  • Rentals usually use credit checks just to see you are who you say you are. Electoral Register etc. and that you have no CCJ's. Even then they are probably more concerned with defaults on mortgage etc. If you can provide statements from existing landlord showing that you can meet the payments, especially if they are higher than the new one, that should help.
