Southern/Curly Fries Seasoning

As part of cost savings last time we were shopping, we bought Tescos own brand french fries (approx £1.60 for 2 Kg) instead of our usual McCain Curly or Southern fries (approx £2.00 for 750 g).

We've just had them for the first time tonight, and whilst they where nice, they're obviously not a patch on McCain's offerings.

Does anyone know what I could sprinkle on the chips before cooking to make them taste a bit closer to Southern or Curly fries (I like either)

:)

I would use cajun spice, I use that on potato wedges to make them taste southern fried and a little goes a long way

Don't know about the flavour as I make my own...

Have you tried a mix of equal quantities of onion powder, chilli powder, garlic powder and salt, sprinkled on oven chips before cooking? Any mix of those four will make very tasty chips, and also try sweet potatoes cut into wedges, toss in oil, add seasoning and cook like oven chips... very nice!

Brilliant. I have garlic powder, salt and chilli powder (and will pick up some onion powder next time I'm shopping).

Can't wait to give this a try now - my mouths watering just thinking about it!

    Thank you!

EDIT: I bet ground black pepper on them as well will be nice too.

Oh and you could make Montezuma's Mayonnaise to dip them in... just mix some chilli powder into mayo (you could add garlic too if you're feeling brave), and dip yer chips to you're heart's content.

You can mix and match chip flavourings, just chilli and garlic, onion powder on its own makes a nice sweet chip, experiment depending on your mood. A little curry powder could go well too. Just don't cook the chips in too hot an oven as the seasoning may burn. (again, a bit of experimentation as all ovens are different!)

And of course black pepper is fab!

If you make up the mix it keeps well in a sealed container in the fridge. It's best made reasonably fresh as it can go a bit lumpy after a while if left in the tub. Just give it a good stir if this happens.

    Have fun!
