Any draw backs?

  • Its a good price but it is a +R not -R system.

I understand that the -R system is most popular bit like VHS and Betamax I think ???

It dosent really matter to be honest , + disks are more popular with home recorders but - more poplar with PC's.

If it bothers you get a multiformat one :)
  • Oh dear, this subject has been beaten to death on an almost infinite number of boards!

Using +R or -R (writable once) discs there is no difference in the way the information is stored.

However +RW disc use a recording mode call +VR. This is more flexible than -RW discs in terms of post editing and finalising discs.

Many -RW players also support DVD-RAM discs. These are unlike either the + or - discs and are available with twice the capacity. They also have a nice feature that lets you record and playback at the same time. They are however largely incompatible with most other dvd players.

Having said all that, neither version is going to do a Betamax in the near future, and I would base the decision on other features, and if you really are worried about the choice then I would agree with the last poster, there are some good dual format recorders now available.
  • I went to buy one of these today but was put off by the comments on the sale label ' yes it's cheap but you get what you pay for' i asked for a second opinion from a salesman and he could only say that it was 'ok'
I decided to leave it. :-/

Unfortunately not, it's just an (IMHO odd) marketing tactic.

Example? They stock(ed?) a few freeview boxes, all of which are a load of rubbish, aside from the Daewoo, which is regarded very much towards the better end of the available boxes, even currently.

However because the Daewoo is (was?) the cheapest they have, it's described as "OK, but you get what you pay for", which is just clearly bull as you'd be the happier customer walking out of the store with it than the next guy with his Goodmans.

without wanting to start a arguement :)

i take your word for the quality of the below 2 items, as i dont know about them

    BUT

if you buy a Daewoo and you expect it to be "OK, but you get what you pay for" then your on to a winner

if you get a Goodmans and its "OK, but you get what you pay for" then you know where you stand

the person who got the Daewoo is laughing as his is better, BUT both sold as "OK, but you get what you pay for"

    if you get my drift

point taken about the argument so this is in that spirit as well.

The point I was making that richersounds just sell their cheapest whatever-it-is as "not bad, cheap, but you get what you pay for" (subtext being "spend a bit more and you'll get a better one")

The comment was made "at least they're honest"

I ventured that IMHO it's just a no brain marketing tactic because in Richersounds specific case, their entire range of Freeview boxes are both more expensive and worse (ranging from not quite so good to wouldn't prop a door open with it) than the Daewoo. So if you did spend a little bit more, you'd get nothing better. I just bring up freeview boxes cos I spend too much time reading up on them as to how good or otherwise they are.

I agree with what I think are your general comments on the specific brands mentioned, but in this case you could also walk out with the philips or panasonic and still get a box not as good as the Daewoo one [It just seems Daewoo got lucky in this one as to who they bought their technology from (NovaPal)] - I was referring specifically to RS's marketing rather than the general opinion of the brand - maybe that didn't come across. Further the gooodmans one was not marketed as "OK but you get what you pay for", by virtue of the fact that it was not the cheapest.

So in short, the cheapo DVD recorder could be absolutely amazing and RS are just saying it's OK for the price because it's their cheapest and no other reason - alternatively it could be a load of rubbish, i dunno.

Hope that clears things up as to me not expressing myself clearly enough, and it's all IMHO so I could be talking a load of crap anyway :D
