The Baby Borrowers TV Series
The Baby Borrowers TV series put five teenage couples aged between 16 and 19 in a unique social experiment exploring the reality of running a household, looking after children and maintaining a relationship. Having never lived together before, they were given their own homes in a quiet street in Norwich with flat-packed furniture to build.
In the first week they started real jobs and experienced the joys of pregnancy, wearing empathy bellies, attending antenatal classes and preparing for the arrival of a child.
Five mothers agreed to entrust the teenage couples with the most precious thing in the world - their babies. The couples looked after the babies for three days, dealing with routines, coping with feeding, changing nappies and playing with the babies - the realities of parenting.
As soon as the babies left they were replaced by toddlers for three days, followed by pre-teens and pets. Three days later the couples looked after young teens (12-14 year olds) and finally the elderly (80+) moved in. They experienced the whole spectrum of life in just four weeks.
Teacher's Pack
A unique Teacher's Pack produced purely from the footage provided by the series and therefore built solely on the experience of the young adults involved, is available FREE to all secondary schools in the UK.
BBC Learning has edited and adapted The Baby Borrowers series, producing four 20-minute DVDs. Each DVD looks at specific aspects of the series and comes with four exciting lesson plans designed to be used with the 11-16 age groups, which facilitate discussion and debate around a wide range of parental and adult responsibilities. The methods used in the sessions are interactive and created for the maximum involvement of all pupils. The DVDs come with a choice of both Welsh and English subtitles and there will be a Welsh text version of the lesson plans.
