(request) any download-friendy music band sites?

brightonman123

with the heavy handed scare tactics of the music/film industry, suing one and all for sharing downloaded stuff (paid or not paid for ?!) ,

i wonder if any bands are taking a different stand, by openly offering FREE (and legal!) downloads- either tracks from pending albums, or just opening up their archives to the masses?

some recent ones i have seen seem to want a LOT of info, which generates repeated spams and mailouts down the line..

rebuilding an 80/90's collection onto CD would be costly; i just dont trust the digital thing completely yet, so would want a physical copy as backup!

if you like rock ,20 free metallica albums
here
(thanks to ghacks)
Don’t expect the downloads to be that easy. They are offering a Java download manager or single downloads of the files. Single downloads mean that a user would have to right-click files about two hundreds times to download all of them. Most live albums have a playing time between 1:30 and 2 hours and mostly contain classic Metallica songs. All test downloads used a bitrate of 192 Kbit.

 Each 'album' listed on this page has one or two 'free' tracks. Click on the album, and then the green cross next to the free song and download it - it's really straight forward (you will need to register of course but there's only a few questions, and no credit/debit card details are requested).

There's a massive 78 free tracks in total (I think) and includes hip hop/rap, soul, jazz & pop. Much is from 'new bands' where I guess they hope you like the free download so much you might just go and buy other tracks.

You can 'preview' each track by clicking on the little blue triangle.

Sure, some of the stuff is rubbish  - but music is down to individual taste and soe of the stuff I hate, my 14 year old son loves! I've found some great tracks. I personally like the 3 tracks by Sylvie Lewis, 2 by Matt Tylor, and 2 by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. Best of all? Check the 2 tracks by The Silver Seas - awesome.

You might like to slowly work your way through the following:-

To my ears, the best of them is the Crimea set.

For occasional tracks, by bands big and small, I go for music.download.com (note no www needed) - at least I do late at night when it's faster to download.
