Old Slides onto PC

My elderly father has hundreds of slides (remember those?) and I would like him to be able to see them without getting the old projector and screen out. Does anyone out there know whether there's a way to scan them in to a PC?
I asked in PC world and the guy there didn't even know what a slide was!!

You can buy a special slide scanner. I did my mum and dads a couple of years ago but it took absolutely ages although worthwhile. I think these photo places can do it for you now but would obviously charge a fortune to do it. The slide scanner BTW was about £80
    I haven't got one!

Yes many scanners have that option, my old Epson scanner 1650 does this. Some scanners have additional adaptors, whilst others have the scanner for slide embedded on the scanner with the help of software and slide attachments.

Theres a new rang of scanners that use Digital ICE which can also clean up and restore photos and slided with the help of hardware rather than the old way cloning with software which is time consuming

I recommend Epson for printers and scanners, they never let me down, although I am sure others are just as good.
