Getting weighed at home

Was just wondering which scales others use for being weighed at home. We're currently using some EKS digital ones, cant remember where we got them from or how much we paid, but the OH and also my daughter dont feel there reliable enough. The three of us are all trying to loose wieght, but obviously dont want to waste money on joining a slimming club, my daughter suggested we just get weighed at Boots, but that would probably be too much hassle to organise, as we would have to go there at the same day/time each week etc. So I'm thinking maybe we should just invest in a decent set of scales, but obviously its best to go off recomendations, so was hoping that anyone on here currently dieting could offer some advice please :)

The ones that we use were the cheapest ones from Tesco . When I do weigh myself (ie weekly!), I make sure that it's when I've just got up in the morning and before I've had breakfast. Scales don't work as well when they are on a carpetted floor, so mine are on the lino floor in the bathroom.

Thanks Vicky. We usually get weighed every saturday morning, before brekkie and we use the conservatory, its a tiled floor and the scales fit on one tile, are your scales digital? My OH doesnt seem to trust this type of scales, says he prefers the other type.

  • I use cheapy ones I got at aldi about 3 years ago, they do me fine. I don't think the scales matter so much, being half or quarter of a pound out doesnt really matter in the scheme of things, what matters is that you can see progress and your weight going down so it's more important to be consistent. Always get weighed on the same scales and at the same time of day, I woun'dt fancy getting weighed in boots either sounds like a hassle and don't you have to pay?

No, mine aren't digital. Nothing that flash here. :D I tried a set of digital scales, but they never seemed to show the weight for long before switching off.

  • I like Salter scales. I find them reliable and accurate. I weigh weekly at SW, and my home scales seem very accurate. They have a wide range of products available in many different price ranges.

I do say this to the OH, his problem is he goes on the scales at different times of the day/week, but come saturday he always shows a weight loss which to me says hes loosing the weight, but he can maybe weigh himself on a thursday and show a completely different weight to saturdays, which make him think they're unreliable  and yes, getting weighed at boots would be a huge hassle to me, I like to get weighed in the least amount of clothes as poss which takes a few pounds off what I would weigh at boots as I would have to wear clothing:rotfl:

My daughter used to go to SW and was loosing steadily, unfortunately she never managed to test out if our scales were showing the same weight as theres as she kept forgetting to check her weight as soon as she got home, and would have her tea etc before she remembered she was supposed to compare them :rotfl:

  • Most scales will vary from others in a 1-3lb difference. The most important thig is if they are consistant. So even if they are 3lbs off of another set, as long as they always are 3lbs off they are fine.

I've found EKS scales the best. Also I find scales that are suposed to be very sensitive and measure in 1/4-1/2 pounds the worst. The 1/4 and half pounds are useless as the next minute you stand on them they will be different.

The ones you currently have, try standing on the 3 times in a row, letting them reset each time before you stand on them again. Do this for a couple of days. If they consistantly say the same thing or very close for each weigh in in a row, they are probably fine. You could always have the whole family do this. This will either prove they are ok or not.

Another thing I have discovered is that cold scales of the electronic type can make you weigh less until they warm up. So if the room is very cold compared to the day before it can affect the reading.
  • Not long ago I went and bought a new set of eks ones, with body fat water etc on them. I thought my old ones might have been out due to age, turns out it was a total waste of money as the old ones work just fine all be it a perminate 2lb variation to the new set.
