mystery loan default

Hi there, my other half has checked his credit report and there's a default for an unsecured loan from Cabot Financial. We've had contact with these people, and sent all the letters as detailed on these sites. After more than 2 years they have failed to come up with any information about this debt - which we know nothing about - and had letters back saying they have been unable to find the original agreement etc etc. It keeps getting passed to new agencies, and we send in the standard letters. How do we get this taken off his (otherwise clean) report. we don't want to have to wait another 2 years for the 6 years to be up.
