How many in your household and what is your grocery budget?

I'm about to start a DMP and have really struggled to work out what we do/ should spend each month on grocerys.

What would a reasonable budget be for 2 adults and 4 children (from 5 - 17)?

Any ideas/ input would be greatly appreciated!

  • £50 a week for 2 adults, a 3 year old, a 20 month old and a cat. :)
    Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043
    Que sera, sera. <3
  • I think this varies tremendously.
we budget £75 per week for 2 adults and 1 3 yr old.
we are usually under this figure.
how many meals are eaten at home each week? do you make packed lunches? do you cook from scratch or use ready meals?
there is lots of good advice on the money saving old style board.
  • My usual budget is £250 for most months £300 for a longer five week month although tightening up and aiming for £200 this month. This is for 2 adults and 3 kids (10/8&5).

I would check out the old style board and the grocery challenge thred. The first page gives what people aim for each month although not the breakdown. The figure are quite varied.

edit - ooopps forgot the cat

Well I'm thinking kids should start packed lunches instead of school meals. We all eat breakfat and evening meal at home. Big son grazes throughout the day as h'e at college (occasionally!). DH likes to cook from scratch BUT has quite expensive tastes which need culling! I'm doing weight watchers and buy their meals occasionally for convenience but am trying to cut back as they cost so much!
I've never actually budgetted/ thought about how much we spend but we need to tighten our belts now!

our budget has been £30 a week for two adults, with all snacks bought from pocket money. But we're finding it nearly impossible so we're going to sit down and work out how much to increase it to.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • mine is £300 per month...2 adults, 2 'kids' (16 & 20)....occasionally more people when kids bring in waifs and strays!!

I was thinking of putting £400 on my DMP application with CCCS. I'd then aim to spend less - does this seem reasonable? We need a big rethink about how we spend money. I have started by taking my reusable waitrose bags to shop at Aldi! ;)
