I don't understand why they are chasing you for these references. If they are references from previous employers then it should be up to the company to chase these.
If personal references then it should be you which is fair enough, but these sound like employer references. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I thought employers weren't allowed to give "bad" references anymore. They have to say nice things, and the worst they can do is refuse to give a reference. Anyone corroborate this?0

Many employers won't give any kind of subjective reference at all (for fear of being sued if anything they put could be considered defamatory).
My old employer would only give a reference of the form:
I confirm that XXX was employed by us from XXX to YYY.
(My new employer said they have no problems accepting such a reference, and that this was the same sort of reference they give!)
Makes the whole idea of references a bit of a pointless excercise though.student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -

Not really - it does prove you were there when you said you were and not languishing in prison or whatever else you might have been doing.0 -
well if u told them before hand you should be asking them why its a problem all of a sudden... considering they gave u the job KNOWING u were 'sacked'.0

I found this out quite recently when I was told the man who sexually harassed me in my last job and was sacked for it, is now happily working in an office-based job with young girls.
In the meantime I was asked to leave because "it would make people uncomfortable" for me to stay after reporting it.
I'm still unemployed. He's making double what he was making before.
Surely thins kind of thing should be mentioned in a reference?GC March Wk1 £28.72/£30 Wk2 £28.4/£29

i can honestly say i want this job till i retire in 36 years! I have no problems with the job and my employers are very very happy with my performance and i too with them. Because of this i have recently bought a new car, started paying off my debts, and six weeks ago i found out my wife was pregnant, I was the happiest i have ever been in my life until this morning.ok thanks everybody i feel a little bit better now but i would be lying if i told you i hadnt been looking for a new job and thinking of selling the car. Just have to wait and see what happens.
My only concern is what happens if i do get sacked? will i ever get another job if you always need a reference?

An employer CAN give a 'bad' reference, IF it is true and objective.
So, if someone was dismissed for persistent lateness, you can say so. But you'd be well advised to have timesheets to back that up.
Sadly, in Mellika's case, there are ways of getting over a bad reference, eg new employer may not have asked for a detailed reference, the 'old' employer might have the policy of only confirming dates, there might have been a compromise agreement whereby the 'old' employer agreed not to say he'd been sacked, a spell of agency work might have provided a 'clean' reference etc. I say 'sadly', but if Mellika feels her references are causing problems, there are ways round that for her too.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

But yes, seems like my old company didn't give details to the new one about this guy. I should've gone straight to the police.GC March Wk1 £28.72/£30 Wk2 £28.4/£29
