Hair straighteners

My hairdresser used GHD straighteners on my hair after cutting and blow drying and I loved the result it was really glossy and sleek, the style lasted for 4 days without any maintenance. However, she did not put any protection on before straightening, I have vey thick strong hair so is it ok to use striaghteners without protection? Usually I do but find it coats my hair and sometimes it feels alittle tacky.

Also I believe GHD are the best but does anyone know of staighteners that compare equally?

  • My hairdressers says I should always use the heat protection spray - but I don't! I find the same problem as you, even using GHD's own spray, I find it makes the hair sticky and not glossy at all, feels a bit like hairspray/laquer. Personally I've used GHD's for about 4 years (about 3 times a week) without spray because I think the result it better, though my hair probably woulnd't thank me for it.

Same, here. I do it raw. I think it gets dirtier quicker if I put gunk in it.

    GHDs are the best.

Yes, I am going to buy some GHD's and use without protection spray my thoughts are if style then lasts for 4 days its got to be better than washing, blow drying and straightening every other day.
  • I use my GHDs without any heat protection spray but I finish it off with Tigi After Party for a nice sleek finish. I wash my hair every second day and it is still sitting perfectly on day 2 provided it hasnt got wet in the rain!

Have very thick hair too, and use salon width GHDs. Find that 'straightness' not so good if use products whilst styling, but use GHDs Angel Tears afterwards. I know should use the heat protection spray, however if were using non-GHDs would be straightening every day instead of 2-3 times per week so hair would be in much worse condition.
  • I dont use protection spray as i find my hair doesnt straighten as good.

I've had GHD's in the past but they broke and i couldnt afford a new pair. So i waited for some deals in argos and found a good pair by Nicky Clarke. I think there just as good as GHDs, they have all the features and they were only £20 reduced from £45 :j I have thick frizzy hair and they do the job just as good

  • 1st things first I am a hairdresser and have been for many years.
I no longer stock the ghd brand, why the price keeps going up and the service is now rubish and the same can be said about there new mk4 irons I find them to be inafective because the do not heat up as you all make them out to do, just read there product guide I quote " Irons operate at around 180 degrees" I have tested this, it is true I got 179 deg with a cooking thermometer not 210 like the original model.
If you do want fantastic results I can recomend the she hair irons these do heat up to 210 degrees and are the very same iron as the original ghd mk3.1b model
these sell for around £60 RRP less than half price of ghd these are sweeping the country look at the number of stockest on the shehair website,
and romour has it mr & mrs ghd have divorced mr ghd has the ghd rights so mrs ghd set up shehair , I cannot tell any difference between the irons must it be true ? does anyone know for sure

I use Remington straighteners, with protection spray by Charles Worthington, these apparently heat up to 230degrees and work quickly on my usually untamable hair. These are fabric covered irons to help prevent splitting and burning of ends. I do find that with out and protection spray i suffer a lot of static and stray hair that seems to go into place with a very small amount of serum.

Erm I doubt it, as GHD was set up by three blokes: Martin Penny, Gary Douglas and Robert Powls (wikipedia "GHD").

My OH has told me to tell all females that the Babyliss 230 degrees straighteners I bought her are rubbish. I have now took them back and bought her the GHD Mark 4, which are ten times better in her words. She has asked me to tell everyone that in her experience the GHD's "just work" whereas others don't. Don't be fooled by the temperature, there is more to it than that.

    Hope this helps.
