I have lived in a fairly OS way for quite a while, and had got used to doing everything for 5, but in the last 3 years we have quite suddenly gone from 5 to 4 to 3 as the older 2 left home, and I am still not used to making things for less people!0

Most of the threads/posts seem to be aimed at families, how do couples adapt old style money saving tips to suit their needs?
Common sense and a bit of low down cunning, and I manage to keep myself on quite a small amount of cash per week.
I am a widow and live on my own ,but it doesn't stop me from trying out some of the bits that I have picked up along the way here.
I make full use of my freezer as it is wasteful to have one that is half empty, as it costs more to run. I can do one machine wash a week, as I utilise the clothes that I have .If you think about it, when you go on holiday you manage to go for a week or a fortnight without using a washing machine.
A kettle boiled once a day, and I top up my thermos flasks with hot water so I can have a cuppa when ever I need one.
The most useful tip I think, is to actually look in your cupboards ,you'll be suprised what you can find in there that has probably been there for a while i.e.tinned stuff.
Last year I was stuck indoors for a few days when the snow came down. I walk with a stick, so it wasn't a good idea to go sliding around the pavements. I had more than enough food in the store cupboard ,even down to a tin of spuds left over from xmas
I bet if you sat and listed all that was in your cupboards you could probably feed yourself for at least a week.
What are you saving tinned food for we aren't going to war again are we ??
Get inventive and use them up .You will find that you can almost save a week's shopping by a little bit of thought0 -

I can't really add to the advice already given, but just wanted to say......
Whatever you take from Old Style, adapt it to suit yourself, what works for one person will not work for others and do any changes gradually rather than trying all at once. That way if anything goes wrong, it won't matter so much. In no time at all, you will have it all down to a fine art and it will be second nature.

I know exactly what you mean - we're a young couple living in a flat and so lots of tips don't apply to us - but it doesn't mean I haven't taken lots of tips from here on board.
Using the slow cooker for dinners is good - especially when you can come home and have dinner already bubbling away.
Making things from stratch, making cakes/biscuits etc and cleaning tips are the main things I'm trying at the moment - Already growing herbs on my windowsill and am considering some other things to grow too.
