  • Hi,

thinking of getting the Abbey Zero card to Balance transfer part of my stoozpot. I already have an ulster gold card and was given a £3K Credit Limit.

What sort of Credit limits are Abbey giving out? I know its obviously individual but how do the Abbey's CL's compare to Ulster / Halifax / MBNA etc.

    Thanks in advance

    BB
  • poor CL, in my experience.

    requested £8k.

    rec'd £4.7k.

and that's with a good credit history.

I think you should be fine as there will be activity on the card (and there will be an outstanding balance on each monthly statement - which you then pay off in full each month).

The 'dormant a/c fee' will be applied to accounts with no activity for 6 months.

I'm planning to stick a small purchase on mine towards the end of the IFC period and then pay the last of the B/T and the small purchase off together - just in case they try and stick me with the dormancy charge, as otherwise I'll not have 'used' the card in the 6 months I'll have had it (I'll just have been making the minimum payments to it - which probably doesn't count as 'activity'!).

As another poster has said, the CL for Abbey seem pretty low.

I asked for a B/T of £4k (and thought I was being conservative!), they gave me a limit of £3800 so the actual B/T was only £3300.

Capital One (last year) when they were doing a card with no BT fee were the opposite - I asked them for about £4k and they gave me £12k!

Oh I don't know - I never requested a particular limit and was given £7k to stooze with. Perhaps I was lucky.

I'm going to get an Abbey Zero as it's Martin's recommended card for using abroad. I'm going to be travelling around Europe for the next year or so and want to leave it as late as possible before I apply for the card so that I can benefit from the 6 month interest free credit. The plan is to do the majority of spending on the card and then pay the balance in full in 6 months time. After this period I'll still use the Abbey Zero card but will ensure that I pay the balance off each month.

    Questions:
    - As I'll be abroad, I'll rely on access to my statement via the Internet, I'm assuming this is possible, but I'd appreciate knowing for sure.
    - Abbey have advised me that I've been pre-approved for the card (I hold savings and current accounts with them) - how long has it taken for other pre-approved customers to go through the application process, ie how long from filling in the form to actually receiving the card?
    - Are there any problems that I may encounter by simply spending and racking up a balance which will be paid 6 months later? I can't think of any, but as I won't be in the UK to it won't be easy to sort out any potential issues, therefore I'd rather ensure that this won't be a problem by asking here.

Many thanks in advance to any help you can give me :-)
    Carol
