Help: Dinner party with dairy free guest

Tomorrow we're having guest round for dinner and one is dairy intolerant. They like simple grub (and lots of it) so I'm going to do:

Starter:
(don't know)

Main:
A roast chicken with lemon and rosemary
Roast potatoes
Roast peppers stuffed with cherry tomatoes
(need a sauce - pesto maybe??)

Pud:

So i need help with the starter, main sauce and a pudding. I want a wow pudding if possible but will go for summer pudding if I can't think of anythiing else.

Why o why didn't they tell me they were coming before tonight?

    Given that they eat meat, you aren't too restricted! I bet if they hadn't said they were dairy free you would probably have come up with something without much dairy anyway.

    Starters
    • toasted ciabatta with tomato/garlic/basil;
    • pate & toast;
    • smoked salmon with lemon wedges and brown bread (serve butter separately) - you could use smoked salmon bits and put them into a little pile to look pretty, maybe mixed with a few prawns (no need for sauce, just lemon juice and black pepper);
    • a small leaf salad with shredded parma ham or devils on horseback with a few toasted pine nuts scattered over it
    Sauce - why not just have gravy made from the chicken juices and a splash of white wine?

    Pudding
    • The summer pudding idea is a good one - or are you looking for something elaborate? What would you have done if dairy hadn't been an issue?
    • Tarte tatin (dairy free pastry is easy enough to make with veg oil - in fact its quite likely that frozen pastry is made this way, I've neve thought to look)
    • If the guest isn't egg free, just cow's milk, then maybe a fruit meringue pie (hot meringue always impresses for some reason)
    • Fruit crumble (make the crumble with vegan margarine) - I did apricot the other day using basic apricots (class II - so the skins weren't perfect) and it was delicious. Plus no effort at all!
    I'll have to go away and have a think... I know it shouldn't be a problem... I'll get back to you!

    Main sauce? Gravy - http://www.wheat-free.org/wheat-gluten-free-gravy-recipe.html .

  • I'm dairy intolerant but I don't expect that everyone else should have to avoid dairy.

    Have you spoken to the person to find out what they tend to eat and what their tolerance level is? I'd eat a small amount at a dinner party although I wouldn't at home.

  • Thanks guys, maybe I am just panicking! It's not like I can't cook so I just need to stop worrying don't I?

    Maybe a prawn / smoked salmon salad for starter then with some hm mayo.

    I wasn't sure that gravy was the solution, would it be OK with roasted peppers with toms in? I'm thinking something lighter would be better?

    I would have done a fruit fool, choc mousse or hm ice cream for pudding but I'm really struggling to think of an alternative. I think I'll go for summer pudding.
