Cold/cough/flu remedies rip off

hi,
I went to the Nurse Practioner today as I am still coughing up phelm 2 weeks after having a cold... I asked what sort of things could help and she was saying that there is NO EVIDENCE AT ALL that so called cold/flu remedies have any effect on the illness.
In fact she was saying what she finds effective is lemon juice and honey (helps with a sore throat she said)all in hot water seems to work a dream, added to this 2 paracentamol for the pain etc and costs very little!
She was also saying that lepsip/benylin etc are a rip off as the lemon/honey is not real lemon/honey - its flavouring. Now I know when i've had colds/flu I spend a small futune buying lemsips etc and am appalled that i've wasted so much money on things which have no use!!
I just wanted to inform everyone else as no doubt there will be many people suffering with colds/flu/coughs in the next few months.

Yeah basically all these 'remedies' are is flavouring, a pain killer of some kind and caffine. Not really worth the money as you could just do a hot lemon drink, a coffee and take pain killers :rotfl: . Same effect really. I've never bothered with these 'remedies' as they are worthless. They take the pain away due to the pain killer and pep you up due to the caffine is all. Can make it worse as you believe you are better and go out just to be worse the next day  .I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy

My cold remedy is to drink a pint of hot tea sweetened with real honey before I go to bed (helps you sweat it out. Plus I will eat a lot of garlic and hot indian food like a jalfrezi.. The other good [point is I dont give the cold to others as after that lot noone comes near:DWho I am is not important. What I do is.0

I can understand that the after effects of a cold, like phlegm, are treated best with real honey and lemon. That's what I do.
However I must wade in in praise of phenylephrine hydrochloride. This is present in 'cold caps' and really does work in drying up a drippy nose
Beechams have it but I prefer to pay a third of the price by buying adsa generic 'cold relief capsules' These do work and I always have some in just in case.
Since I've been taking vitamin D supplements (6 months) I've not had a cold so my cold caps are a bit dusty but there if required

I find I'm usually ok after a few days of taking nothing and giving my cold to someone else...0
