Surely they can't do this?

Just received a bill from our gas and electric provider asking for an additional £200 on top of our normal direct debit instalments. When we phoned they said it's because they haven't done a meter reading in over 2 years???

Can they go back that far? Seems a bit unfair that they have gone back two years?

You can always submit your own reading whenever a bill contains an estimated reading, and the supplier will re-bill you based on that customer reading.

Whichever way you go about it, you have to pay for what you've consumed.

  • Meter readings are a joint responsibility between you and your supplier. I think utility companies have to read a meter at least every 2 years but it's usually much more frequent. If you get an estimated bill ring a meter reading through.
