Question About State Pension

Options
Do people on state pension get housing and council tax benefits.

Comments

  • Possibly, yes - it depends on your total income though.

I have a feeling that if you get Pension Credit (to top up your State Pension) then that unlocks the door to HB & CTB and possibly other benefits too.

HB, CTB and some other benefits depend on total income - State Pension is included in total income, so receiving a State Pension will not, on its own, be a barrier to other benefits.

Your local Citizens' Advice Bureau will be able to help you by giving you a 'benefits check', if you're able to tell them your exact income, rent, other expenses, etc. They will also tell you how to apply and go through the forms with you if necessary.

To be honest, the whole benefit system is horribly complex. Your local benefits office should have someone who will look at your whole situation and suggest the benefits you could be entitled to. They even help to fill in the forms and many will visit you at home.

Call your local CAB and see if they can put you in touch with the right people.

My mum did this and the benefits officer claimed for all sorts of things my mum didn't even know existed! They want you to have what you're entitled to so give them a call, via CAB.

As to whether you can claim means-tested Benefits whilst on State Pension, it all depends on total income.

Foe example if you have an Occupational Pension too, or your wife/husband has other income, then it may put you over the threshold for means-tested benefits.

CAB the way to go, ask for a Welfare Rights Advisor.
